Phil’s biography

Teaching Philosophy

Phil’s goal is to help students think critically and creatively, using math as a lens for broader problem-solving skills. He believes in pushing high-achievers beyond their comfort zones, teaching them how to slow down, analyze their own thinking, and tackle truly challenging problems with methodical precision.

Personal Approach

With warmth and patience, Phil connects with students of all backgrounds, creating a supportive environment where they can thrive. Having experienced the feeling of being unsupported as a top learner, Phil is sensitive to the emotional challenges of pursuing high academic rigor and empathizes deeply with students who may feel lonely in their abilities. His sessions emphasize growth, resilience, and the joy of mastering new skills.

Areas of Expertise

Math competitions, including AMC 8, AMC 10, AMC 12, and AIME, junior high and high school mathematics, with a special focus on geometry and creative problem-solving.

Academic Achievements

Phil holds a BS in Brain and Cognitive Studies from MIT, with additional graduate work in the same field. As a high school Math League competitor, he excelled at the county, state, and national levels, laying the foundation for his lifelong passion for mathematics and teaching.

What Students and Parents Say About Phil

“That was probably the most efficient tutoring session I’ve ever witnessed.”

Debbie S. (Director of Admissions, Epsilon Camp)

“Thanks again for all your help! I think you struck a really authentic balance between offering up your interpretations and wisdom and also letting me learn on my own and be curious.”

Nate C. (Student)

““I want to thank you both sincerely for the confidence that has grown inside of Hudson since working with you. Since working with you, Hudson’s test scores across the board have improved and his Computer Science grade has gone up 20 percentage points. I am happy with the success Hudson has been showing. He is much calmer, more confident, and visibly feels better about himself. It’s been awesome to watch, and I only wish I had sought your team out sooner. I cannot speak highly enough about you and I sincerely appreciate your working with Hudson.”
