MATH COMPETITION COACHING
The ‘something more’ you need for competitive admissions
For students aiming for top-tier colleges, grades and test scores aren’t enough. Math competitions can be the necessary “spike” for your application.
Through our coaching, they’ll perform better in these contests, independent of whether they self-identify as “math kids.” But more importantly, they’ll also gain critical thinking and self-management skills that admissions officers value most.
This is the primary varsity sport of the academic world. We’d like to help you use it to stand out from other bright students and to thrive in college and beyond.
About our math competition coaching services
Your math competition coaching experience can go far, far beyond merely preparing for the next test. With the right guidance, your high-achieving student can build a deep, intuitive understanding of mathematics while developing skills and habits that truly set them apart: skills ranging from creative problem-solving to self-management and habits ranging from self-awareness to commitment-load triage. If you plan to tackle any of these tests:
- AMC 8
- AMC 10
- AMC 12
- AIME
- USAMTS
Your student will need a flexible and creative approach to succeed. The problems on the AMC, for instance, go far beyond typical schoolwork in difficulty, demanding ingenuity and adaptive thinking that aren’t often taught in traditional classrooms. Our one-on-one coaching provides a focused environment where these unique skills can be learned, practiced, and internalized.
At Wes Carroll Tutoring & Coaching, your student will learn how to approach unfamiliar problems with confidence, mastering complex concepts with determination and even delight instead of with the risk of burnout. After over 20 years of helping students excel in math competitions, we understand that traditional schools don’t teach the kind of problem-solving that competitions like the AMC require. Here, your student will save time and energy by learning to thrive, not just “braining it harder.”
This coaching isn’t only about higher scores; it’s about fostering a lasting love both for math and for extreme challenges. With smart, efficient preparation, your student will build skills that benefit them in college and far beyond, emerging from each session ready to tackle new challenges with clarity and confidence.

What people say about our math
competition coaching service
“Not only did my daughter’s confidence in math improve significantly, but she also became much more proactive and clear in identifying the areas she needed help with. In the beginning, she was unsure of what she didn’t understand, but over time, she gained mastery of the concepts and became more focused during her sessions. I’m so grateful for the support Quinn provided in helping her develop both her math skills and self-confidence.”
Paige and Jen N.
Parent: “Thank you, you’ve been amazing. You’ve really had a huge impact on him. Everything that’s changed has been because of him growing and responding to you. We really appreciate it – it means a lot to us.” Student: “Working with you last year made a huge difference. Now, it’s so much easier for me to sit down and know exactly what I need to study and how to study it. Thank you.”
Kiyan, Lori, and Kaveh V.
“Thanks for all the support for Shiven, you have been a wonderful mentor and guide for him and we are so blessed that Shiven had a chance to learn with you in his academic journey (…) It’s great to have open conversations with you, Quinn, because you’re truly our eyes and ears. The extra time you spend with Shiven gives us valuable insights into his progress, something we lacked before. In the past, we never knew if he was getting value from his sessions, but with you, we have full confidence that he’s receiving the support he needs. We really appreciate your transparency and dedication.”

What is the AMC, and why does it matter?
The AMC (American Mathematics Competitions) is a prestigious math competition that helps top students stand out in college admissions. Success in the AMC can lead to training to represent the USA in the annual International Math Olympiad, one of many ways in which this activity yields meaningful recognition by elite universities.
What is the AIME, and why does it matter?
The AIME (American Invitational Mathematics Examination) is a selective and prestigious test recognized by top universities like MIT, Caltech, Harvard, and Stanford. Only those who place highest on the AMC 12 or AMC 10 are invited to participate. Being invited to participate is an admissions “gold star.”
How do I know if my student is a good candidate for math competition coaching?
If your student excels in math but struggles with the creative problem-solving required for competitions, or if they want to develop the flexible thinking needed to tackle high-level math challenges, this coaching is a great fit.
What results can we expect from Math Competition Coaching?
Most of our committed students succeed at qualifying for the AIME, earning a significant admissions “gold star.”
Crucially, they also gain key problem-solving skills that help them in college and beyond. These problem-solving skills are the whole point of the AMC. But sadly, most students (and most coaches) don’t fully understand this. This leads to earning points but not also skills. This causes a lot of trouble for them later: they find themselves in elite rooms, facing challenges they can’t effectively grapple with.
How long does it take to prepare for the AMC?
Most students see a three-to-six-point boost in their practice test scores for each of the first few sessions. Depending on your student’s current math level and goals, this may be sufficient. Others work with us for longer in order to build the skills needed to succeed, not only in competitions like the AMC and AIME, but also in the top-tier universities to which the AMC/AIME leads them.
How is your program different from other math tutoring services?
We focus on building holistic problem-solving skills, not just content review. Our coaching prepares students to tackle unfamiliar, challenging problems — skills that are often neglected in traditional tutoring.
